Viana do Castelo is the surf gateway to Portugal's lush green north — a historic city where the Lima river meets the Atlantic, surrounded by forested hills and some of the most undiscovered surf in the country. Praia do Cabedelo, immediately south of the Lima mouth, is the main break: a consistent beach break that can fire at all sizes. Praia de Afife and Praia de Âncora to the north offer further options. The region is less developed for international surf tourism, making it attractive to surfers seeking authenticity and solitude. Viana is also a beautiful and culturally rich city — outstanding Manueline architecture, vibrant local food culture (vinho verde, barnacles, fresh fish), and the spectacular Romaria de Nossa Senhora d'Agonia festival in August. A thicker wetsuit is required year-round due to cooler northern water temperatures.
