Figueira da Foz is a seaside city at the mouth of the Mondego river in central Portugal, home to one of Europe's longest continuous sandy beaches. Buarcos, just north of the main beach, is a powerful beach break that hosts national surf competitions and is best for intermediates and advanced surfers. The main Praia da Figueira offers more accessible waves further toward the river mouth. The surf scene here is more local and unpretentious than southern Portugal — a strong community of Portuguese surfers who've been riding these breaks for generations. Figueira offers excellent value for money, all the amenities of a genuine city (good transport, cafés, nightlife), and easy day trips to Coimbra and the Serra da Lousã mountains.
